Dr. Howard E. Buhse Jr. died on July 1st in Downers Grove, Illinois at the age of 88. He was born in 1934 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Winnetka,Ill. He attended Winnetka elementary schools and graduated from New Trier High School in 1952.
Dr. Buhse was a professor in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago for over 40 years and served as associate head of that department for several years. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and obtained his PhD in zoology from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He focused his most recent research on ciliated protozoa, a model system for analysis of many research problems in biology, and mentored over 30 graduate students earning masters and doctorate degrees.
He is survived by his wife, Moira; son, Andrew; two daughters, Dr. Lucinda Buhse and Rachael Brady; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. No services are planned. Donations can be made to Ding Darling Wildlife Society at dingdarling.org
