Betty J. Matz (nee Melton) devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025 after a brief hospital stay. Betty was a long time resident of Downers Grove. She was born on February 13, 1934 in Blue Island, Illinois. She graduated from Dwight D. Eisenhower High School in 1951. She was married to the late Edward Matz and previously to the late Arlie Melton.
Betty was the proud mother of three children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Dr. Douglas A. (Gail O'Keefe) Melton, Laurie D. (Gary Lester) and Michael A. (Trish) Melton; by her grandchildren, Adam Lester, Mark Lester, Jeff Lester, Emma Melton, Sam Melton, Matthew Melton, Amy Melton and Jacqueline Melton and by her great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Lennon Lester, and Wyatt Lester, Forrest Melton, June Melton, along with many other devoted family members and life long friends.
Betty owned and operated her own public stenography company, Betty Melton and Associates, for decades in the Chicago Loop. She was hardworking, dedicated and vibrant. She maintained a strong and loyal clientele with her intellect, her effectiveness, her dedication to customer service, and her interpersonal warmth.
Betty was a long time and active member of Christ Church in Oak Brook, Illinois. She was also a member of the Frederick Graue Society, the Chicago Wine and Food Society, and Connoisseurs International.
She cherished her relationships with her friends and family. She loved to play cards, especially bridge, and any board game. Her happiest moments were spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren, traveling and socializing with friends. She was genuinely curious and strongly connected to so many who knew and loved her.
Funeral Services will be private at a later date.
